A Comparative Study Of Linguistic Features In Results And Discussion Section Of Chinese And Foreign Linguistic RAs

Since 1980 s,genre and genre analysis have caught many linguists' attention.Lots of scholars have done researches on various sections of research articles like introduction,conclusion and abstract.However,results and discussion section are much less researched on.In the meantime,Genre Structure Potential(GSP)theory has been applied to many genres like news,fairy tales,novels and advertisements but very few on research articles(RAs),let alone linguistics RAs.The present study selected 50 results and discussion section in research articles(RAs),25 coming from foreign journals and the other 25 from domestic ones.The selected results and discussion sections comprised two data bases in the hope of building up the GSP formula after a thorough comparative study.To help readers to understand deeply on the results and discussion section of linguistic RAs,this study also included linguistics features like modal verbs,tenses,voices and first person pronouns.It is found out that at the structure level,the GSP formulas are similar between linguistic RAs at home and those abroad,both highlighting the results move.Regarding the optional components,they exhibit different focuses.As for linguistic features,the use of the first person pronouns,tenses,voices and modal verbs also varies.This research may offer some suggestions for English learners on thesis writing.Making comparative analysis on results and discussion sections in linguistics research articles at home and abroad,it may help readers better understand results and discussion and improve their own writing skills.
