As a kind of spirit food,children's literature greatly benefits children's life and growth.Apart from the common features of literature in general,children's literature has its own characteristics.In recent years,children's literature has gained a rapid development.Though significant achievements have been made in this area,yet the study of children's literature translation still suffers from critical neglect and undervaluation.Thus the author carries out this study and attempts to explore the strategies and theory that can guide the children's literature translation and appeal more attention to improve the quality of children's literature translation.Initiated by Hans J.Vermeer,Skopos theory is a new landmark in translation field as well as children's literature translation.Skopos theory lays emphasis on text's purpose.The translation of children's literature also has obvious purpose.In order to meet children's reading need,children's literature is unique in the choice of theme,structure and style.Translators of children's literature must take into consideration those peculiarities and correspondingly employ flexible strategies to achieve translation purpose.Through textual analysis,this thesis makes a comparative study of the two Chinese versions of Oscar Wild's Happy Prince and Other Tales from the perspective of Skopos theory,the author tries to find to what extent can Skopos theory be applied to the study of children's literature translation and how to practice it.The dissertation consists in five parts.In the introduction,the author gives a brief introduction of the background information,research purposes,methods and significance of the study.The first chapter introduces children's literature concept,its characteristics,its history as well as the current situation of its translation and research.Chapter two severs as a theoretical framework,briefing the history and three rules of skopos theory and its vital role played in children's literature translation.Chapter three makes a detailed analysis of the two Chinese versions of Happy Prince and Other Tales to test the effectiveness of Skopos Theory in children's literature translation.In the conclusion,the author summarizes the findings of this dissertation and pinpoints its limitations.
