An Analysis Of Chinese-English Conference Interpretation From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

Language is the tool for meaning generation.Pragmatics is the study of language understanding and its use,involving all the complex phenomena of linguistic behaviors,which can be embodied as a comprehensive view on linguistic phenomena from the perspective of cognition,society and culture.Adaptation theory puts pragmatics into use from the functional aspects of language in order to study language selection and adaptation.Also,Pragmatics perspective helps us to fully consider the different aspects of language use and take full account of the complexity of language role in cognition,society and culture.The thesis studies the interpretation text of 2016 Premier Li Keqiang’s press conference under the direction of adaptation theory put forward by Verschueren.Through four angles of adaptation theory,which are contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,dynamics of adaptability and salience of the adaptation processes,language selection and adaptation in the interpretation of Premier’s press conference are analyzed thus to study the translation strategies and methods for interpreters in the process of interpretation practice.The thesis is divided into four chapters.Chapter one is foreword,briefly introducing research background,significance and literature review.Chapter two is theoretical framework,including the content of adaptation theory,three core concepts and four research angles.Chapter three analyzes the features of Premier’s press conference in terms of vocabulary,sentence and discourse,points out the specific application of adaptation theory in interpretation and lists the example analysis of its four angles.Chapter four summarizes the entire thesis with the conclusion,limitations and prospect of adaptation theory research in interpretation.The thesis aims to analyze the linguistic choice-making and adaptation in interpretation,prove the application of adaptation theory and provide translation strategies and theoretical directions for future practice.
