Literary Translation From The Perspective Of Adaption Theory

This thesis is aimed to analyze the guidance of Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory in literary translation with the case of The Hills at Home (excerpt) by American writer Nancy Clark, from the perspectives of contextual correlates of adaptability and the structural objects of adaptability.According to Verschueren, language use is the continuous making of linguistic choices, consciously or unconsciously, for language internal and language external reasons. Internal reasons mainly refer to the language structure and external reasons the communicative context. After introducing Adaptation Theory to translation, we can see that translation can be considered as the process as verbal communication activity, is a continuous process of choices, for the translator can choose "what to translate" or "how to translate". In literary works, the form and content are of equal importance, therefore, the translator has to make dynamic adaptation of language based on various contexts macroscopically and language structures microscopically, combining the writer’s intention of writing and writing style with the syntax of Chinese characteristics and cultural contexts by applying certain translation skills such as making annotations and additions, adjusting character order and so on to achieve a satisfactory version.
