A Study Of The Interpretation Of Press Conference From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

Language is a tool for meaning generation.Pragmatics is a science aiming to study language,to help us understand and use language appropriately.From the perspective of adaptation theory,pragmatics is an overall view of language,which studies the selection and adaptation of language.We can take this view as a tool to explore the way of language use and complexity of its role in cognition,society and culture.Adaptation theory consists of three core concepts and four main research angles,which are contextual adaptation,structural adaptation,dynamic adaptation and consciousness salience in adaptation process.By the study on the case of 2016 Prime Minister Li Keqiang's Press Conference interpreting,we aim to find how to switch interpreting strategies in conference from the perspective of adaptation theory.This thesis generally introduces the reason why I take Prime Minister Li Keqiang's answer to journalists' questions as the study case and Adaptation Theory as the guidance theory basis.This thesis makes a literature review,mainly involving the studies of Adaptation Theory abroad and at home and the brief introduction of studies of SI from the Perspective of Adaptation Theory.Besides,it presents the theoretical framework overall.It introduces the Adaptation Theory generally first and explains the three core concepts in Adaptation Theory,which are variability,negotiability and adaptability following a statement of four researching angles including contextual factors,language structure,dynamic factor and consciousness salience degree.Most importantly,case study lies on the top position in this thesis.After an analysis of the features of Prime Minister's Press Conference Language,the thesis explores the practice of the interpretation from four different angles under the guidance of the adaptation theory.For the contextual adaptation,it involves the adaptation of physical world,social world and mental world.As to structural adaptation,it is analyzed following the sequence of word adaptation,sentence adaptation and s discourse adaptation.Next is dynamic adaptation consisting of dynamic adaptation of time,context and style.The last one angle is about consciousness salience degree.There are several examples in each one of the context above to testify that theadaptation theory has a constructive function in supporting the SI practice.After all above,conclusion about major findings of this study and limitations and expectations for further studies are drawn.Based on the case study,there are different strategies and suggestions concluded to inspire interpreters to improve and perfect their practice in relative field.
