headwear is the general term for the cloths used to wrap the head in the ancient China. It is the representative of the traditional Chinese costumes, and it is also the symbol of the hierarchy in the ancient society.Various linguistic forms of naming the headwear reflect the traditional culture of ancient China, and they also carry much cultural information in social material, spirit,as well as systems. To probe into the naming motivation of the ancient headwear means to have an all-around trace of its cultural origin. This thesis conducts a systematic analysis of the naming motivation of the ancient headwear from the perspective of cultural linguistics, and it aims at unfolding the profound historical and cultural outlook hidden behind the naming of the headwear. The whole research paper includes six chapters.Chapter one: introduction. This chapter sets forth the reasons for selecting the topic, and the contents, status, methods as well as the significance of the research. On the basis of the research status, the thesis is a new exploration of the headwear naming from the perspective of cultural linguistics. With the methods of description, exposition, and culture reference, the paper systematically analyzes the cultural linguistic motivation of headwear naming. In chapter two,the origin,as well as the development of headwear naming are overviewed, and there is a definition and demarcation of it,which specifies the relationship between the headwear naming and culture.Chapter three is about the linguistic motivations of the headwear naming in ancient China. At that time, the linguistic forms could be divided into single-morpheme words, compound words, and “proper nouns plus general terms,” of which “proper nouns plus general terms” were the primary forms.Analyzing the linguistic forms is the basis of expounding its cultural motivations.Chapter four focuses on the cultural motivations of the headwear naming in ancient China. In this part, both the rules and the features of the headwear naming are dissected.According to the dissection, the cultural motivations fall into ten types: forms, materials, colors, decorations, animals, characters, nature, functions, implied meanings, and dynasties. Each of those types presents different cultural featuresChapter five mainly analyzes the cultural connotation of the headwear naming in ancient China. The linguistic and cultural motivations fully reveal the contained cultural information: the material culture, system culture, and spiritual culture in the ancient society.Chapter six is the conclusion of the entire thesis which reviews and summarizes the contents and points out the deficiencies.
