There is a growing international consensus on the protection of intellectual property rights. The legal system of intellectual property is not perfect in China, however, there are many perfect legal terms in developed western countries that deserve our study. The translation task is the first part of Managing Intellectual Property Rights in Citizen Science. The initiator of the task is a translation company who regards researchers and citizen scientists as target readers. Therefore, the translation can serve as a guide for our researchers and citizen scientists to protect their legal rights.Managing Intellectual Property Rights in Citizen Science is an informative text with formal and precise language style. The source text takes U.S.intellectual property law system as an example, and specifically discusses intellectual property issues in citizen science project.Nida(2004)defines translation as making the most fluent and native correspondence with original language in meaning and style. Therefore, guided by the translation strategy of keeping precise, the translator discusses how to translate legal text on the basis of functional equivalence theory. For the significant distinction between Chinese and English in term, part of speech, information completeness and sentence structure, the translator adopted some translation methods, like annotation, conversion, amplification and reconstruction of sentence structure. The translation of legal text requires solid linguistic and translation foundation as well as abundant legal background. The translator primarily studies legal translation under the direction of functional equivalence theory, and wishes to give certain reference to those who translate such kind of materials.
