A Study On Conceptual Metaphors In Fu Shan’s Poetry

Fu Shan is an essential diehard poet of the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty with a high status and a great influence on literature.At present,there are a few researchers who make studies on Fu Shan’s poetry from the perspective of cognitive linguistics.Therefore,this thesis tries to explore Fu Shan’s poetry from the perspective of the conceptual metaphor theory.On the one hand,this study could broaden the width of the study on classical Chinese poetry in theory and then make some contributions to interdisciplinary research.On the other hand,this thesis could deepen the readers’ understanding and cognition of classical Chinese poetry so as to show the explanatory power of conceptual metaphor.Chen Pi Shuang Hong Kan Ji is a collected edition of Fu Shan’s poems.Therefore,this thesis chooses 108 poems that embody the diehard character of Fu Shan,and then adopts the quantitative and qualitative analysis to analyze metaphors existed in Fu Shan’s poems from the perspective of conceptual metaphor.This thesis reviews the researches related to Fu Shan’s poetry and metaphors that have been done by domestic and foreign scholars in the past few years.Then,this study presents the theory of conceptual metaphor,and gives a detailed introduction to its classification and cognitive mechanism with illustrative examples.Furthermore,this thesis makes a statistically analysis and explores the nation land emotion embodied in Fu Shan’s poetry from the perspective of conceptual metaphor theory.This study attempts to explore the following two questions:(1)What important and typical conceptual metaphors are embodied in Fu Shan’s poetry?(2)How does Fu Shan express his feelings and enhance the artistic appeal of his poems through the conceptual metaphor theory?The research uncovers that,(1)metaphor is prevalent in Fu Shan’s poetry,and the living environment,living conditions and social life of Fu Shan are reflected in all kinds of metaphors.According to the Metaphors We Live By made by Lakoff and Johnson,the conceptual metaphor can be classified into three categories,namely,structural metaphor,ontological metaphor and orientational metaphor.And the structural metaphors in Fu Shan’spoetry mainly focused on emotional metaphor and numeral metaphor while ontological metaphors concentrated reflections on substance metaphor,personification metaphor and container metaphor,also,and the orientational metaphor shows in DOWN metaphor.Through the analysis of conceptual metaphors in Fu Shan’s poems,the reader would closely associate these metaphors with the real life so as to better understand Fu Shan’s poems.(2)This thesis applies the conceptual metaphor theory in expressing the themes of Fu Shan’s poems,which makes a good performance of Fu Shan’s commitment to country and people.He is concerned about the homeland,taking care of the hardships and livelihood of common people as well as paying much attention to family affection.According to the abundant conceptual metaphors in Fu Shan’s poetry,this thesis finds that there are distinctive themes and metaphors make the poetry vividly.Besides,the metaphors existed in Fu Shan’s poems greatly enhance the artistic appeal and narrow the distance between the reader and the real life.This study combines Fu Shan’s poems with the conceptual metaphor theory analyzes main types of metaphors existed in Fu Shan’s poetry,and further explores Fu Shan’s commitment to country and people,which will help to deepen reader’s understanding of Fu Shan’s poetry and lead succeeding researches to delve into the classical Chinese poetry.
