| Metaphor is ubiquitous in our daily life,not just in language but in our thought and behavior.Political discourse is always embedded with metaphorical expressions,and the studies of political metaphor have been steadily on the rise.Plenty of scholars at home and abroad have studied political metaphor with the approach of cognitive linguistics,most of whom merely put emphasis on the analysis of foreign political discourses or State Council Government Work Report.Studies on metaphor in political discourses at provincial or municipal level are rather few,the Work Report of Chongqing Municipal People’s Government(WRCG for short)in particular.Since the WRCG is a primary way for people to obtain the newest progress of Chongqing and China,this thesis attempts to put forward a new theoretical modelling:Conceptual Blending Theory(CBT for short)plus Metaphor Scenario Theory,namely the CBS model,an integration of the two with the procedure of Positive Metaphor Analysis(PMA for short).Based on the CBS model,the author further interprets the metaphors from social and cultural aspects.According to the storylines extracted through the identification of the fixed characters and the relations of the sense-related metaphorical items,metaphor scenarios are built.And with the explanation of the functions of metaphor,the thesis reveals the underlying social ideologies and political principles.The thesis tries to help people have a deeper understanding of the WRCG from a perspective of linguistics.Both quantitative and qualitative methods are adopted in this thesis.The source corpus is the three pieces of the WRCG from 2017 to 2019 collected from the authoritative website: http://www.cq.gov.cn/,including altogether 53623 Chinese characters.After identifying and analyzing the corpus with the CBS model,the thesis finds that there are mainly eight types of conceptual metaphors in the WRCG and eight corresponding metaphor scenarios are built: Pan-labor Metaphor Scenario,Building Metaphor Scenario,War Metaphor Scenario,Organism Metaphor Scenario,Production Metaphor Scenario,Journey Metaphor Scenario,Machine MetaphorScenario and Family Metaphor Scenario.The prominence of the eight scenarios are closely related to the local culture and the ideologies of the political leaders,which is also the epitome of Chinese culture and the ideologies of the Communist Party of China(the CPC for short),hence,the conceptualization of which owns both the universality and individuality.The functions of metaphor such as dissemination and empathy greatly help the public to realize that Chongqing is a city full of vitality and people of Chongqing are industrious and energetic.Under the wise leadership of the CPC and Chongqing Municipal Party Committee(CMPC for short),the people will have a greater chance to defeat the difficulties and build a stronger Chongqing.Based on the CBS model to study the conceptual metaphors in the WRCG,the thesis stresses the sociocultural and historical factors that the previous related studies seldom noted,helping people better comprehend the political ideas conveyed by the Chongqing Municipal Party Committee.Besides,the study is conducive for people outside Chongqing to better learn the city and thus our country so as to build a bridge between China and the world. |
