| With the development of modern medicine, people have already found effective ways to cure acute pain. However, for chronic pain, people still cannot deal with it effectively.Pain and Suffering, written by Ronald Schleifer, analyzes the impacts of age, gender, emotion, religion, and politics on chronic pain, and tries to help doctors to find an effective treatment. This report is made up of six parts, which are introduction, basic information of the translation project, preparation and analysis in the pre-translation stage, case analysis, limitations, and conclusion.Among the six parts, case analysis will be the main part,in which the translation of parentheses, such as double dash structures, contents in the brackets, and double comma structures is covered from the perspective of communicative translation.During the translating process, the author found there were plenty of parentheses in the source text, which influenced the coherence of sentences. If those parentheses were used in the target text as in the source text, the thinking of readers will be interrupted. Therefore,in accordance with Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory, the target-language oriented author divided parentheses into three categories: explanatory parentheses, supplementary parentheses, and example parentheses and the translation of three kinds of parenthetical components are explained in detail, which are recasting, structural transformation, and fronting. The translation will be more coherent and consistent and the readers of target language can feel the same language effect as the source language readers. |
