This report is based on the E-C translation of the book The Expectation Effect:How Your Mindset Can Transform Your Life, written by David Robson.Published in January,2022,this popular science text mainly introduces how people’s expectation can influence their lives. The book consists of ten chapters, and the first two chapters are selected for translation and analysis in this report.During the translation process,it is found that there are a number of parentheses in the source text. With diverse forms and flexible positions, parentheses have various functions such as supplementing information and giving explanations.Parentheses are common used in English texts. However, frequent occurrence of parentheses in Chinese hinders the readability and coherence of sentences, which brings difficulties in the process of translating parentheses into Chinese. Therefore, the translation of parentheses is chosen as the research object in this report.Under the guidance of Communicative Translation Theory, four methods are adopted to deal with the difficulties in translating parentheses, including preposition, embedding, linear translation and adding brackets. This report aims to explore the translation methods of parentheses in different types and is expected to provide some references for the translation of parentheses in popular science texts.
