| The translation contest is an important means to improve the translators’ ability and select the translation talents. In recent years, translation contests at different levels and in different fields have been flourishing, providing an excellent platform for many translation talents in China. The review is an important part of translation contests, generally divided into three parts: preliminary review, second review and final review.Due to the large number of participants, the preliminary review is often the most stressful part. How to assess the translation quality accurately, quickly and intuitively in the preliminary review is an urgent problem to be solved. The translation quality assessment in the translation contests is different from the general translation quality assessment. It requires the simple process to enhance the efficiency, the reasonable parameters to enhance the accuracy and the quantitative results to enhance the intuition. In order to achieve this requirement, the authors think it is necessary to improve the existing assessment model.Domestic and foreign scholars have done a lot of research about the translation quality assessment theory. It can be mainly divided into two models on the whole, namely the standard-referenced model represented by Juliane House’s Translation Quality Assessment Model and the criterion-referenced model represented by Malcolm Williams’ Argumentation-centered Translation Quality Assessment Model. After researching the theory mentioned above, the author finds that they can’t be fit for the requirement of the translation contests due to its complicated parameters and process. It is not feasible to apply the existing theory directly. It is necessary to re-establish the parameter and construct a new quantitative model. The German scholar and translation theorist,Katharina Reiss,in her monograph Translation Criticism: Potential and Limitations, proposes that the text type of the source text determines the translation method. And different translation methods have the corresponding translation quality assessment standard.According the Reiss’ s theory, when the evaluator assesses a text-oriented translation, the translation criticism standards should be derived from the categories of text-oriented translation criticism.Since the anonymity of the translation contests basically excludes the human factor, the translation methods adopted are text-oriented.Therefore,this theory can effectively guide the establishment of translation evaluation parameters in the translation contests. With the guidance of the theory mentioned above, taking Han Suyin Award for Young Translators as an example, the author finally establishes the three assessing dimensions of comprehension, expression and cohesion by researching the annual review report. In the construction of the model, the author introduces the concepts such as the matching degree, the mistake calculation to quantify the translation quality assessment. Then the author adopts the space coordinate system to put the three dimensions into the coordinate and uses the distance between the zero point and the coordinate as the result of the translation quality assessment. It effectively reduces the subjectivity of the evaluation process and makes the translation quality assessment more operable and scientific. This dissertation consists of five chapters: Chapter One gives an admirably succinct account of the study with the rationale, objectives, methodology and the organization of the dissertation included.Chapter Two reviews the previous studies on the TQA theory both at home and abroad.Chapter Three provides the theoretical framework of the dissertation. The author introduces the Reiss’ s translation criticism theory and its meaning in guiding the establishment of the assessing parameters.Chapter Four is about the construction of the quantitative model. The author discusses which parameter and mathematical model should be adopted by researching the annual review report.Chapter Five draws the conclusion of the dissertation. |
