Li Yan,a Chinese-Canadian writer,also is a female representative of new immigrant literary writer.She makes a great contribution to the world of Chinese literature field through creating many bilingual literary works by means of self-translating.Li Yan is recognized by Canadian literary community by virtue of her first original English work Daughters of the Red Land.After self-translating this work into Chinese Hong Fu Ping,she earns her reputation in domestic literary circles.At present,most researches on this writing at home and abroad are focus on its content and significance,on its writing skills and narrative features,or on its female writing and functional writing and so on.It is rare to see research on this work from the perspective of translation,not to mention research on its reader-oriented translating methods.To fill the gaps,this paper attempts to study Li Yan's reader-oriented translating methods from the perspective of Reception Aesthetics.The self-translated literary works omit the dialogue between the source text and the original author,and focus on the dialogue between the target text and the target reader,which makes the translator pay more attention to the reader.And Reception Aesthetics stresses the active role of reader in translating process because the reception of a translated work relies on the reader's reception competences and expectations.It is feasible to study the impact of the reader on the process of literary selftranslation under the acceptance of Reception aesthetics.By adopting concepts of Reception Aesthetics such as “the reader's horizon of expectation” and “Text's Response-inviting Structure” to the case study of Li Yan's self-translation,the author of the thesis tries to explore the reader-oriented translation methods in Li's practice of translating her English work Daughters of the Red Land into its Chinese version Hong Fu Ping,and to show Li's concerns for her target readers.This thesis is divided into six chapters.Chapter one makes a general introduction of the research background,objectives and significance,research questions and methodologies.Chapter two centers on reviews of self-translation research and Reception Aesthetic research and researches on Li Yan and her work Daughters of the Red Land.Chapter three introduces the theory of Reception Aesthetics and the main concepts such as readers' horizon of expectation,aesthetic distance,text-appealing structure and implied reader.Chapter four involves connotation and classifications of self-translation,and motives of author's self-translation.Chapter five makes a comprehensive analysis of Li's reader-oriented translating methods such as omission,addition and conversion to satisfy readers' horizon of expectation and create expectations for readers,and methods like generalization,restructuring and shift of perspective to create text's response-inviting structure to evoke readers' active participation in the process of reading.Chapter six summarizes Li's concerns for readers in the process of self-translating,and testifies the applicability of the theory of Reception Aesthetics to emphasize the importance of the reader in the practice of literary self-translation.
