The Study Of Socio-pragmatic Failure In Press Conference Interpreting

In accordance with socio-pragmatic failure theory in pragmatics,this thesis analyzed the background and causes of socio-pragmatic failure in different contexts and its negative effects on communication.Transcripts and videos of press conference interpreting were collected in the study aiming to illustrate the nature of socio-pragmatic failure and to put forth suggestions of avoiding such kind of pragmatic failure.Analysis in this study focused on socio-pragmatic failure aiming to find its pragmatic and social features.Transcript and videos of press conference interpreting in NPC and CPPCC from 2013-2015 were collected for the study.In accordance with literature review and theoretical speculation,qualitative research was conducted in which pragmatic and social features were highlighted.For detailed discussion,socio-pragmatic failure is analyzed in two major contexts: linguistic context including word level,sentence level and paragraph level;social context including cultural context and situation context.In linguistic context,socio-pragmatic failure was analyzed in linguistic level,but what was considered is speech act's influence upon communicative effects rather than grammar structure or linguistic rules.In social context,socio-pragmatic failure was dissected from perspectives of two factors:the style of speech acts,the time and space of speech acts.This study quoted examples of socio-pragmatic failure in each context and collected its pragmatic and communicative influence so as to explore its causes and to raise solution of avoiding socio-pragmatic failure.This thesis found that socio-pragmatic failure occurred both in linguistic context and social context and that the cause of socio-pragmatic failure and its impact upon communication varied according to different contexts.So the author concluded that socio-pragmatic failure concerned its negative effects on communication such as blocking communication,confusing audience or causing misunderstanding.At last coping measures and suggestions were proposed to overcome socio-pragmatic failure.
