A Research On The Intercultural Communication Effectiveness From The Theory Of Expectancy Violations

Language is the main kind of media of intercultural communication.Intercultural communication effectiveness depends on whether the two parts have gained effective communication information and whether they have satisfied their expectations on each other.When one part of communication cannot satisfy the other's expectation,then the violation occurs.In the process of intercultural communication,especially when two parts are not familiar with each other,violation can easily occur under such a condition.To solve this kind of issue is to research completely and exactly the main factors that influence communication effectiveness and find out some proper solutions and suggestions.In our society,any kind of relation is inseparable with communication,whether the communication is effective directly influence or even decide whether the relation can develop healthily or last for a long period.So it has theoretical and practical significance to enrich and improve the research of intercultural communication effectiveness.This research is based on the theory of expectancy violation,which is put forward by Burgoon.Observation analysis is applied in this research.The resource is the dialogue between doctors and patients.This dissertation research and analyze the communication features of doctors and patients,and the violation of expectation.This research will analyze from the following three parts.First to analyze and summarize the intercultural communication effectiveness.Then based on the expectancy violation theory and the observation of doctors and patients,analyze the functions and dysfunctions that influence communication effectiveness when violate the expectations.At last,based on analyzing and summarizing the research results,make some suggestions on communication effectiveness and improve communication competence.What the research has found is that in intercultural communication,it is important to have expectation on each other as well as how to understand expectation,which means either satisfying the expectation or violating.It can directly influence communication effectiveness.The cultural differences,social and economic status and the degree ofeducation of both parts may influence communication effectiveness.Based on this,the author put forward some suggestions according to these aspects.
