As a report on pre-interpretation preparation in Chinese culture class interpretation,this paper describes the author's personal experience of interpreting for the calligraphy class during Beijing International Chinese College's summer camp for foreign students and analyzes the interpreting process to discuss problems in such kind of interpretation and possible coping strategies.The report divides the preparation process into three parts: advance preparation,last-minute preparation and in-class knowledge acquisition with different focuses,from which examples are selected for further analysis of problems in four categories: terminological problems,comprehension-triggered problems,culture-specific problems and language-related problems.While terms can be easily prepared beforehand,language and culture-related preparation takes more time and effort and are of greater importance when doing Chinese culture interpretation.It is therefore recommended that interpreters should understand the text and grasp the overall sense while preparing instead of focusing solely on individual words.To deliver in a way that can both resonate with the listeners and express the essence of Chinese culture is also a challenge interpreters need to tackle.Therefore,the success of an interpreting task relies not only on short term preparation,but also long term knowledge acquisition and accumulation.
