Influence Of Culture-loaded Expressions On The Quality Of Chinese-English Simultaneous Interpretation An Coping Strategies

With Gile’s Effort Model as its theoretical foundation, the paper explores the influence of culture-loaded expressions on Chinese to English simultaneous interpretation and the effect of interpretation strategies in dealing with culture-loaded expressions through an empirical research.The paper reviews studies on culture-loaded expressions conducted by former researchers and introduces Gile’s Effort Model, including the basic concept, problem triggers and failure sequences. Based on Gile’s theory, the paper analyzes three difficulties of interpreting culture-loaded expressions:cultural difference, intensive information and barrier to comprehension. Strategies for translating or interpreting culture-loaded expressions, another focus of scholars, are also reviewed and summarized in the paper.The paper adopts both quantitative and qualitative analysis in the empirical research. The quantitative analysis reveals the relation between the accuracy of interpretation and the amount of failure sequences, which proves that culture-loaded expressions are problem triggers and can lead to two kinds of failure sequences. One is the failure in interpreting the culture-loaded expressions, and the other is the failure in interpreting the following content. The paper also collects strategies used by interpreters. Explanation, literal interpretation, replacement, omission and abandonment are major strategies, among which explanation is the top choice. The qualitative analysis casts light on the effect of different strategies. The conclusion is that interpreters can provide accurate and integrated interpretations for culture-loaded expressions if they use these strategies properly.
