Divisadero, with its complicated structure and profound theme,is widely acclaimed as one of the most successful works of the Canadian writer,Michael Ondaatje.Since its publication in 2007 it has been the spotlight of Western literary critics.Lots of researches have been done from various perspectives like Modernism,Postmodernism,Deconstructionism and Aestheticism, exploring such themes as natural identity, social and cultural identity, politics and so on,and analyzing its narrative techniques like nonlinear narration, collage and collaboration, and pastiche.Based on all these research findings, this thesis will conduct a Postcolonial study of Divisadero, hoping to expand the research in it and offer a better understanding of the novel as well as the writer. This thesis, mainly based on Homi K.Bhabha's Postcolonial theories, will be conducted from three aspects: the main characters' transgression of borders;hybridity of different characters, cultures as well as reality and fiction;and reconstruction of the characters' identities.Through the analyses, this thesis has drawn the conclusion that Divisadero,in a large sense,a Postcolonial novel which expresses a theme of diaspora for it encourages people to transgress the narrow national border so as to fulfill the reconstruction of their identities as global citizens, also Postcolonial identities in Bhabha's view.It reflects Ondaatje's insight of cosmopolitanism.
