| Michael Ondaatje is a Canadian Asian immigrant writer who is known as "International Writer"."Orphans" are a series of characters created in Ondaatse’s novels.They are the spiritual products of the Times,"spiritual waifs" and "rebels in vagrancy",which are rich and unique.Ondaatjee deliberately placed them in the background of the rapid development of industrialization and globalization in the 20 th century,emphasizing their rebellious and divided inner world and the unknowable fate that is hard to escape,making their images more full of cultural metaphorical meaning for the living state of individuals in the current era.Therefore,this thesis mainly studies the image of "orphans" in Ondaatje’s novels.It takes several of Ondaatje’s novels as the study object,and on the basis of close reading of the text,combines the "history writing" and "memory searching" in the novels to deeply explore the theme o f "orphans" in Ondaatje’s novels.First of all,based on the close reading of the text,this thesis makes a detailed analysis of the group images of "orphans" in Ondaatse’s works from three aspects,namely family,culture and society,and focuses on the dislocation life they have suffered under the double dilemma.Secondly,the thesis explores the generation mechanism of Ondaatje’s "orphan" image,and reveals the origin of the author’s creation by integrating life experience into the text mechanism from three aspects: Ondaatje’s historical background,his unique diaspora experience and the narrative ideal of "orphan" as an individual narrative.Thirdly,based on the level of form,this thesis examines Ondaatse’s creative thinking of skillfully using writing strategies to present the unique inner experience of "orphans" from the two creative techniques of retrospective narration and fragmentation collage respectively.Finally,the thesis reveals the literary and practical significance of Ondaatje’s "orphan" image.The image of "Orphan" is a textual reflection of Ondaatje’s unique experience of personal life.It is an image metaphor of the "orphan" living state and the unknown fate that people are facing today.and it is also a cultural metaphor of the survival dilemma that people have to encounter when they are living in a foreign land under the background of global multicultural development and the problem of their own identity.Therefore,the purpose of this thesis is to arouse people’s humanistic concern for the common spiritual dilemma encountered by mankind,hoping to create a better spiritual life together. |
