A Translation Report On The Location Of Culture(Chapter7:Articulating The Archaic)

Postcolonialism is one of the most dynamic academic thoughts and also an important method in the field of literary and cultural criticism. Homi K. Bhabha is one of the leading figures in the postcolonial studies with his vigorous thoughts and extraordinary creativity. His incisive perceptions in the postcolonial studies have exerted great influence in the academia. The Location of Culture, a collection of the important theses by Homi K. Bhabha between the middle1980s and the early1990s, has received wide attention in the academic world right after its publication.Since the "cultural turn" took place in the translation studies in the1970s, researchers have paid more attention to factors outside the original text influencing the target text. As a result, the concept of translator’s subjectivity has come into being with its affiliated studies. By translating "Articulating the Archaic", the seventh chapter in book of The Location of Culture, this thesis intends to, on the one hand, introduce Homi K. Bhabha’s postcolonial theory to China to provide fresh materials to studies in this filed and on the other hand, to apply the theory of translator’s subjectivity in the exploration of the appropriate translational strategies for the purpose of better cross-culture communication. In addition, this thesis also delves into the difficult problems occurred in the process of translating, i.e. translation of difficult and long sentences and obscure academic terms.
