Translating Shaanxi Cultural Terms In Beautiful Shaanxi

This paper is a report based on the author's translation of Beautiful Shaanxi,a documentary introducing Shaanxi folk culture to the outside world.In the context of the frame theory,the paper provides solutions to the translation of 63 Shaanxi cultural terms which pose as problems in the subtitling project.Specifically,the report probes into four sets of factors which contribute to her decision-making,namely audience,context,time & space,cognition &communication.Corresponding translation approaches are proposed on the balance of the four in an effort to build a cognitive framework for the audience so as to achieve the optimal communication effect.Approaches are provided respectively for Shaanxi cultural terms with partial framework in the documentary(in the case of images or text supporting part of the perception),and terms without any cognitive framework(in the case of no images or text to support perception).The author of the paper holds that the translation of Shaanxi cultural terms in documentary subtitle results from a balanced choice after analysis of the four sets of factors,and the translation approaches to the 63 Shaanxi cultural terms in subtitle succeed in ensuring the communication effect of the documentary and will hopefully shed light on the translation of similar text types in the future.
