This paper explains how a traditional Chinese village during the 1980 s experienced rapid transformation of its culture. This meant criticism of traditional ways when faced with the modern world. The village had to adapt quickly even whilst trying to preserve ancient traditions related to their ethnicity. With this in mind I have studied the Buyi people and Miao people of the Gao dang Village in the An shun City area, which focused on four areas of social life–organization of production, architectural culture, marriage culture and education. At the individual level I have studied personal identity, attitudes and behavioral models of adaptation. This paper uses a literature research method as well as field observations and surveys. The research results are summarized as follows.Firstly,it can be said that village adaptation to modernity still followed distinctly Chinese cultural norms.Next it shows that the level of education, types of communication and village economy were all factors influencing adaptation to modern life. Also the study of this village may be useful for other villages undergoing similar rapid transformation. Finally this paper puts forward relevant suggestions for ways the Buyi people can continue to further reform their culture by developing and adapting their traditional culture. This is with the aim of promoting social harmony in the face of powerful modern forces.
