Originating from the Book of Poetry as well as the Songs of Chu,Fu is generally acknowledged as one of the most scintillating Chinese literary genres, with its expressions as melodious as euphony and its style as delicate as it can be.Nevertheless, studies and researches pertaining to the translation of it are considerably scanty, only tens of papers coming in handy. In this connection,it is of much significance to conduct a systematic and exhaustive study on the translation of fu writings against the very backdrop of China's overseas cultural transmission. This thesis selects more than twenty pieces of fu,all of which are unexceptionally reckoned as classic, and embodied in Zhao Ming Wen Xuan(hereafter referred to as Wen Xuan),an anthology of enormous eminence compiled by Xiao Tong,a renowned literati in Liang Dynasty. In Chinese academic field,a school committing itself to the study of Wen Xuan has enjoyed its prolonged existence and far-fetched influence. On the grounds that these classic fu are crowned as the best fu writings embodying the stylistic features and linguistic styles to their full, they entail a good deal of value for researching. This thesis is theoretically based on the Cognitive Construal proposed by Ronald W.Langacker, and specifically centers around such construal dimensions as scope, perspective, and prominence with a view to providing a new perspective for the translation study of the fu writings embodied in Wen Xuan.In this thesis,it is held that translation,in essence, reflects the translator's indefatigable efforts to achieve the construal harmoniousness between the author and the reader. The criteria for “good translation” should not be simply confined to semantic or functional equivalence but entail the cognitive interaction between the translator, the author, and the reader so as to effectuate the construal harmoniousness. This thesis falls into five chapters. The first chapter deals with the research background, research questions and methods, research significance, literature review, theoretical framework, and the structure of this thesis.Chapter Two is intended to explore the translation of color words and allusive words on the basis of thedimension of scope.Chapter Three, theoretically based on the perspective construal with several subordinate parameters availed, aims at illuminating whether the translator has achieved the construal harmoniousness when translating the scenes and emotions brimming in fu writings in Wen Xuan(hereafter fu for the sake of language brevity).Chapter Four examines the fu translation at the lexical and sentential level in the dimension of prominence.Chapter Five presents the conclusion,in which the research findings and limitations, together with some suggestions for further study, are illuminated respectively.
