This is a report on the translation of Chapters 1-3 of One Fat Englishman,a satirical comedy of the British novelist Kinsley Amis.Chronicling a corpulent British publisher's adventures on a brief business trip to America,One Fat Englishman is a typical work of British people written by a British writer. After an in-depth analysis of One Fat Englishman, the translator found that the novel is imbued with irony, taunt and ridicule. With humorous language and accurate depiction of mental process,Kinsley Amis creates vivid characters in this satirical comedy. The translator believes that,on top of exact and faithful rendering of the source text,it is also of great importance to put across the satirical and humorous tone. Therefore, the translator chooses functional equivalence theory as the guidance of this translation, trying her best to retain the information and styles in the original. There are five parts in this report.Part One introduces the background information, significance and structure of the report.Part Two analyzes One Fat Englishman, including introduction to its author Kingsley Amis, the main content and its stylistic features.Part Three is an overall description of the translation process, including preparations before the translation, choice of translation theory, time arrangement, translation and proofreading.Part four focuses on case analysis under the guidance of the functional equivalence theory.Particular emphasis is laid on three main translation difficulties and various translation skills the translator employs, which include adjustment of complicated sentences, addition of hidden information, word conversion, processing of incomplete sentences. The last part summarizes the lessons and experience learnt from the translation process.
