This thesis reports on a study designed to measure, examine, and attempt to explain the motivation to learn English of first and second year non-English major students within the theoretical framework of D?rnyei's(2005)Second Language Motivational Self System(short for L2MSS),while including some context-specific factors like language anxiety and autonomous learning experiences. The purpose of the study was both to contribute to the validation of D?rnyei's model and to capture the impact to the other two factors brought by L2 MSS,exploring the function of students' self orientation in English learning. As for practical operation, qualified and quantified method has been combined in this study.A survey was designed and administered. All the questions are based on previous studies and minor modifications has been made.Path coefficients analyses of the data provide considerable empirical support for the validity of this theory and its relevance.Analysis of the data revealed that the relationship within the system is too complicated that the strongest predictors should depend on the specific situation,as well as learning experience exerted a mediating factor within the system. Also, ideal L2 self and L2 learning experiences lead a better autonomous learning behavior. Moreover, language anxiety was easily found but reduced by pleasant learning experiences. On the subject of different grade,ought-to L2 self of second year students made more contributions to autonomous learning behavior. However, first year students always tend to produce anxiety.Besides, ideal L2 self and ought-to L2 self are the most critical factors influencing autonomous learning behavior for first-year students. The results of this study can provide some useful information to English teachers specializing in teaching, class design and language acquisition. However, due to the reason that research subject of this study is complex thus the limitations can hardly be avoided;and the view toward English is changing forever. Therefore this study still needs a chronically observation and further discussion.
