As Plato remarks in the republic "There is an old quarrel between philosophy and poetry," disagreements on who is to possess the "source of wisdom" has been ongoing for centuries.Prior to periods of Renaissance and Enlightenment, poets are often the ones subject to diminishment, especially during those earlier debates.Since around the fifteenth century, the table has been turned around a bit.Recognition and appreciation for poetry arises among some of the renowned philosophers, including Holderlin.Holderlin,in the era of Romanticism,is deeply aware of the "modernity" crisis of the time.As a poet,he attempts to,with the power of poetry, soothe the tension and contraction between man and nature, the subject and the object. His thoughts are keen, subtle, and insightful, with a far-reaching influence on intellectuals succeeding his own time.Crediting to the advocacy from Heidegger,Holderlin's work successfully pushes the integration of poetry and philosophy a step further. In Western ideologies of the modern period, reconciliation of the rivalry between poetry and philosophy emerges from the undeniable and inseparable contribution of Holderlin.
