| Lacking the strength of the interpretation skills with which a native speaker is endowed,the growing number of foreign students in China whose mother tongue is not Chinese,nor English encounter more and more difficulties in coping with all the strenuous tasks related to the act of interpretation.In order to narrow the gap between them and the Chinese and English native speakers these students are obligated to find different personal strategies that will assure them a better and faster development of their interpretation skills.One of the issues that is seen by many foreign students as an impediment towards enhancing their interpretation skills is the obscurity of their notes that leads to the incapacity to read out from the notebook an accurate version of the original message.Therefore,the aim of this paper is directed towards eliminating the note-taking difficulties that I encountered in two speeches(mistakes that have also occurred in former speeches),and in doing so I will analyze my notes in order to detect the weak spots in the overall structure and the words that can be omitted or replaced by shorter or more accurate(in reflecting the original meaning)forms.Furthermore,I will also provide for the reader a personal compiled list of commonly used,but very useful symbols and abbreviations,and,nevertheless,will explain how to used some specials symbols in order to reduce the note-taking time while conserving the essential message embedded in the speaker’s words.A part the of techniques and strategies presented in this paper draw their source of inspiration to several relevant internet sources and nevertheless to my “interpretation Bible”,Andrew Gillies’ “Note-taking for Consecutive Interpreting,A Short Course”,but most of them are based on personal discoveries,to which I only assigned special names that I found in the workings of other authors(whenever I need to explain them). |
