In the wake of the increase of outstanding foreign narrative non-fiction works introduced to China, the key for a translator is how to translate them in a proper way for readers in China.A good translation of narrative non-fictions should make a good balance between preserving its original literary character and addressing the message to the readers accurately so that readers of the translation can know well about truths and history. Therefore, the study on narrative non-fictions is necessary and important, while systematic studies concerning this topic are not adequate in China at present.Based on the English-Chinese translation of the American One million Steps written by Bing West, the thesis analyzed the application of semantic translation and communicative translation presented by Peter Newmark in the nonfiction war book, classified and made some conclusions to offer a way of thinking to translate narrative non-fictions.From the perspective of the features of semantic and communicative translation, the thesis made an analysis of this project and found that in One Million Steps, semantic translation was applied to render the literary style of the book by keeping the original sentence structure and address the message objectively by being faithful to the original text, while communicative translation was applied to strengthen the effect of expression by using idiomatic and fixed expressions of Chinese, shape the image of characters by translating nicknames based on the Chinese culture and make the message more clear by restructuring the sentences.
