Humor is a ubiquitous phenomenon in everyday life, reflecting the positive and optimistic attitude toward life and replete with philosophical life wisdom, and the effective humor translation carries great weight with the successful translation of a literary work.Cutt's relevance translation theory(RTT)is the research fruit achieved by the application of Sperber and Wilson's relevance theory to translation study and provides a fresh perspective for research on humor translation. From the viewpoint of RTT,humor translation is a dual ostensive-inferential communicative process which can be clearly displayed with the aid of the key concepts in translation such as maximal relevance, optimal relevance, processing effort, contextual assumption, etc.Based on literature review, the thesis intends to conduct a case study on the humor translation in Ch'ien Chung-shu's masterpiece-Fortress Besieged with its translated version under the guidance of RTT with a discussion of the relevance-theoretic criteria to guide the translation of humorous texts as well as an objective summary and analysis of the translation methods and techniques used in the novel.By analyzing the humor translation in the novel,it is found that the translator's flexible adoption of translation methods can facilitate the conveyance of the original humorous effect so that the translated version can achieve the validity of humor translation.
