Construction Of Interpersonal Meaning In Translation Of Fairy Tales

Grimm's Fairy Tales enjoys wide popularity since it had been introduced into China which has profound influence on Chinese children's growth.Therefore much more attention is paid to the translation of Grimm's Fairy Tales.From the perspective of interpersonal function,the interpersonal meaning of original text is the important content of translation and purpose of translation is to construct the interpersonal relationship between author and target readers.The interpersonal meaning provides a new theoretical perspective for translation of fairy tales.Whether the interpersonal meaning in the fairy tales is conveyed and understood by children becomes the reference to evaluate the translation.This thesis,based on interpersonal meaning in SFG,conducts contrastive analysis of Grimm's Fairy Tales and its two Chinese versions(Wei Yixin's Version and Yang Wuneng's version)with qualitative and quantitative method,explores and figures out reasonable methods in the construction of interpersonal meaning in translation of fairy tales.It is found that two versions all realize the interpersonal meaning from mood and modality systems.However,Yang's version completes better realization of interpersonal meaning and makes some necessary adjustments for target readers in consideration of their linguistic conventions and cultural backgrounds.The interpersonal meaning in his version is easier to be understood by target readers.In the construction of interpersonal meaning,translators not only identify the original interpersonal meaning,but also need to make some adjustments in view of target readers' acceptance.The thesis also attempts to verify the practicability and operability of interpersonal meaning in translation of fairy tales and provides a new perspective for translation studies on children literature.
