| This thesis analyzes a Chinese character research book written by Joseph Edkins which titled Introduction to the Study of the Chinese Character.The author was a eminent missionary of London Missionary Society,preached Christianity in China for 50 years.This paper analyzes the content of Joseph Edkins’ s research on Chinese characters,analyzes the teaching method of Introduction to the Study of the Chinese Character,evaluates its compiling principle and compiling thought,and hopes to enlighten the teaching of Chinese characters as a foreign language.This paper consists of five chapters:The first part of the article is the introduction,which briefly e x p l a i n s the objective and significance of this thesis.This chapter reviews the research status of previous missionary Chinese studies and Chinese language teaching materials,especially Introduction to the Study of the Chinese Character,and introduces the research methods used in this paper.The second chapter briefly introduces the life of Joseph Edkins,as well as the background of writing Introduction to the Study of the Chinese Character.It also presents and analyses the main content of the book and the understanding of Chinese characters of Joseph Edkins.The third chapter is the analysis of the research content of Chinese characters.This chapter includes five sections.From the perspective of Chinese ontology research,this chapter focuses on analyzing Joseph Edkins’ s study on Chinese character radicals and the interpretation of “the Six Principles in the Formation of the Characters”.The fourth chapter analyzes the teaching content of the book.This chapter includes three sections.In the part of teaching arrangement,the number,difficulty and selection criteria of Chinese characters in the book are analyzed.The teaching methods section discusses the method of radical analysis,induction and association.The characteristics of teaching in this book are described as learner-centered and country-specific.The fifth chapter is the basic evaluation,which comprehensively evaluates the contribution and deficiency of the book in teaching Chinese characters as a foreign language,and summarizes Joseph Edkins’ s view on Chinese characters. |
