With the rapid development of information technology, people's requirements for products and service have changed from function to experience. In the field of interface design, how to increase the experience of interface has become a new proposition. Many researchers begin to explore bringing synesthesia into the design of interface elements, building new relationships between different sensory channels, and constructing cross-modal experience for users.Icon as one of the elements in interface, also can be designed in this way. However, through the study of existing icon design methods,we found that a majority of methods are about icon's function and usability design and they are also mostly focus on the single vision dimension. There remained a lot of space to be discussed that what effects will other dimensions of feeling have on icon design. In consequence, this paper will attempt to study icon design from the angle of the audio-visual synesthesia, invent the icon design strategy based on sound visualization, and provide new ideas. This paper starts from relevant theoretical research,by conducting creation and design experiments to discuss the icon design strategy based on sound visualization.Firstly, some basic concepts are clarified like the non-speech sound in human-computer interface(HCI),the icon in HCI,sound visualization and so on,based on theoretical research.Though analyzing these concepts,we obtain the appropriate type of sound and icon for this topic, understand the audio-visual conversion process in sound visualization, and give a preliminary presumption of icon design principles. Then,we conduct the creation and design experiment. It includes three phases:Ordinary users create freely, expert users design collaboratively, and icon matching test. This experiment dwells on the icon design process through visualizing sound as well as design results.Meanwhile, the concepts "visual semantic characteristics" and"visual style characteristics" are developed to lay a foundation for the design strategy in later paragraphs. After that, building the theory framework of icon design strategy based on sound visualization, which is divided into three parts:Audio-visual elements selection strategy, visualizing design mapping strategy and cognition-experience strategy. Finally,an interface design case is introduced under the guidance of design strategy to verify its feasibility and value. The significance of this paper lies in:First of all,it stands at the points of icon users, discussing the icon design from a more subjective and emotional perspective.Secondly, sound elements are introduced into icon design process in this paper to study how other feeling features in addition to visual affect the design. On the basis of this,we propose a new icon design methodology based on synesthesia to provide theoretical guidance for practice.Furthermore, more intuitive correlations between visual and auditory channels in interface are established through sound visualization,it may optimize original independent and parallel state between sensory channels, create more congruent cross-modal audio-visual experience for users and help enhance their perception of interface. Therefore, this paper will give some contribution to increasing the experience of interface.
