The China Review was an academic journal published in Hong Kong from 1872 to 1901 as an outlet for scholarly writings on China written by foreign scholars,which was also an important platform to learn,communicate Chinese for those westerners living in China at that time and reported the latest achievements in Chinese learning and research of westerners in China.This paper focused on the articles published in The China Review and investigated the results of Chinese learning and studying of westerners at that time with a hope to provide some useful experience and inspiration for Chinese teaching.This thesis consists of five parts.The first part is an introduction,mainly states the origin of this topic,the research significance and current status.The second part introduces the information on the China Review and the contents and classifications of Chinese Leaning and study.The third part investigates the journal's articles about Chinese ontology research from three aspects,which are Chinese historical comparative study,Chinese dialects and Chinese grammars.The forth and fifth parts mainly explores westerners' study of the journal from Chinese teaching perspective.The fourth part discusses the Chinese teaching and learning from the perspective of experience exchange and teaching materials or reference books of Chinese of westerners.The fifth part investigates the discussion on the Chinese traditional dictionaries and the dictionaries for learning edited by Westerners at the time.
