Virginia Woolf is a splendid writer of modernism in English history of literature. The thesis explores Woolf's art of conception in the narration of Jacob's Room, which embodies in three aspects:unique manifestation of characterization, implicit embodiment of ecological theme and elaborate combination of narrative techniques.Firstly, characterization in Jacob's Room reflects not only Woolf's subversion to traditional character portrayal but her pursuit of feminist values.Secondly,Woolf surpasses the restraints of times to mirror the theme of ecological crisis implicitly in Jacob 's Room.Woolf is eager to look for balance from natural, social and interpersonal imbalance in order to achieve the harmonious co-existence of human, society and nature. And lastly, the analysis of narrative techniques in Jacob's Room is unfolded from three perspectives:alternation of impersonal and personal narration, construction of nonlinear time order and integration of internal and external structure. As a transitional novel, the narration has both personal and impersonal tendency of writing."Moments of being" as the core of psychological time contribute to constructing nonlinear psychological time order of the novel. The integration of the excursive external structure and the cohesive internal structure conveys Woolf's profound understanding of real life.Though Jacob's Room is Woolf's tentative work, its artistic values are worth studying and exploring.
