Interpersonal meaning, one of the three meta-functions of Systemic Functional Linguistics, refers to how people use languages to express their views in communication, and to influence others' behavior, thus to establish and maintain a certain interpersonal relationship. An important factor in evaluating the success of the translation of literary works is whether or not interpersonal meaning in translation is constructed completely and accurately.Based on the interpersonal function of Systemic Functional Linguistics of Halliday, this thesis takes Runaway, written by Alice Munro who won the Nobel Prize in 2013,as a case study to analyze it and its Chinese version by Li Wenjun. The analyses show that construction of interpersonal meaning is mainly realized through Mood,Modality, and Appraisal systems.Because English and Chinese have a lot of similarities and differences in grammar or mood, the translator should,in the process of translation, choose some reasonable ways to translate the text literally or make some adjustments accordingly, which,of course, should be done from the perspective of interpersonal meaning and on the basis of a deep understanding of the original text as well.Through the analysis of Runaway, the full and accurate understanding of the theory of interpersonal meaning of Systemic Functional Linguistics is achieved.Meanwhile, the study can provide a further reference for domestic scholars to study Runaway from the perspective of interpersonal meaning.
