With the development of China’s Going Out Strategy, the translation of Chinese literature works is becoming more promising, and it will help the rest of the world learn about China and enhance its national cultural soft power. This report studies the Chinese-English translation of Love in the 1980 s,a novel written by Zheng Shiping. With Systemic Functional Linguistics as the theoretical foundation, the report investigates the interpersonal meaning in the source language and its delivery in the target language, and reveals the guiding role of Systemic Functional Linguistics theory in literary translation. The interpersonal meaning of the literary translation comes in the dialogues and the description of characters,of scenes, and of the states of mind of the characters in the translation. The interpersonal metafunction of the clause in Systemic Functional Linguistics focuses on the representation of language interpersonal functions in various grammatical forms. This research has shown that the theory can guide the Chinese-English literary translation practices. This report finds that the English translation can be improved, from the perspective of interpersonal metafunction,by the application of three translation methods including choosing the right moods, emphasizing modality, and highlighting appraisal meaning.Specifically, choosing the right moods refers to the choice of subject and marked mood;emphasizing modality refers to modal orientation and degrees of modality;and highlighting appraisal meaning refers to representing or stressing appraisal images. These findings help achieve the smooth delivery of interpersonal meaning from the source language into the target language and provide references for future Chinese-English literary translation. |
