The Study On Important Tibet-related Activities Of Lowell Thomas

Since the 1940s,Tibet got more and more attention from the United States,and grew to an important piece for it,the United States and Tibet had an tight relationship from then.And,the American visits to Tibet made an important role in improving the American to know more about Tibet and the communication between them.Lowell Thomas was an very famous American radio commentator,at the same time he also was an explorer,writer,speaker and journalist.In the summer of 1949,with the help of the officers of United States Embassy in India,he and his son visited Lhasa successfully in the name of getting the invitation from the Government of Tibet,achieved the dream of the tourist to Tibet.Lowell Thomas' trip opened the window of the internationalization of Tibet Question.Then,Lowell Thomas himself and the things he done had been important focus in the study area of Tibet Question.This thesis will make a study on Lowell Thomas and his affairs relating to Tibet in order to rich the content of the modern history of Tibet,reappear historical truth,and provide historical discourse for resolving Tibet Question,based on numbers of historical archives and the analysis of text material.There are five parts in this thesis.Chapter one is Introduction,focusing on studying the current research at home and abroad and introducing the reasons why to select this subject.Chapter two is the Life of Lowell Thomas,focusing on the growth and development process of Lowell Thomas' s life,restoring the true face of historical figure,and forming the intuitive understanding so as to make a groundwork for the later explore.Chapter three is Lowell Thomas' Trip to Tibet,focusing on the background of his trip,the primary process and the main activities,and to know well the details of the history so as to clear Lowell Thomas' job on reporting Tibet,influencing Tibet discourse and appealing the support for Tibetan.Chapter four is Lowell Thomas and American Emergency Committee for Tibetan Refugees,focusing on the background of its establishment,purpose,organization and operating ways,the main works relating to Tibet,and to expose the works American had done supporting Dalai Lama and the exiled separates,to expose the factors under US behind the Tibet Question whose core is the independent of Tibet,with the analysis of history archives.Chapter five is Conclusion,this thesis argues that Lowell Thomas and his affairs relating to Tibet made an important roleon the movements of Tibet Question,and had important functions on supporting Dalai Lama and the exiled separates,making the discourse of the independent of Tibet in the western media,concocting the myth of Shangri-La,and supporting the internationalization of Tibet Question.
