Translation Of Body Metaphors In Nahan From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

According to the Functional Equivalence Theory,translation is mainly for the intercultural communication between different languages,and what the target readers get from the translation should be equal to what the original readers get from the original text.The paper aims to analyze the Yangs' translation of body metaphors in Nahan from the perspective of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,discussing how they deal with the body metaphors in translating this novel into English and which translation strategy they have used to achieve the functional equivalence between the original text and their English translation.The paper makes a comparative study of the Chinese body metaphors including the metaphors of "heart","mouth" and "head" in Nahan and their English counterparts.This study reveals that the domestication and foreignization are both used in the Yangs'translation of body metaphors.In dealing with the Chinese body metaphors of specific culture characteristics body metaphors,they tend to use the strategy of foreignization,so as to make English readers better understand the relevant Chinese culture.However,the inadequate uses of annotation in translating the Chinese body metaphors of specific culture characteristics have failed to help the English readers to get what the original readers used to get from the original text and thus failed to realize the functional equivalence between the source text and the target translated text of Nahan.
