Based on the translation,introduction and research materials,this paper teases out the developing process of translating and introducing Lao She's works in South Korea since 1930s,and mainly focuses on the Korean translation and introduction of his novel Rickshaw Boy.There are mainly three questions to discuss in this paper:firstly,what does the translation and introduction of Lao She's works has gone through in South Korea?Secondly,as for the five Korean versions of Rickshaw Boy,what differences and characteristics do they have?Lastly,what kind of attitudes and comments do Korean readers and scholars hold towards Rickshaw Boy?With a sound foundation of the empirical studies,and from the perspectives of comparative literature and aesthetics of reception,this paper discusses the developing process of translating and introducing Lao She's works to Korean,compares different translated versions of Rickshaw Boy and its reception in South Korea.First of all,the translation and introduction of Lao She's works in Korea has undergone three stages of development:the first one is an initiate period from 1930s to the middle of 1940s;the second one is a period of stagnation from the middle of 1940s to 1970s;the third one is a period of rejuvenation since 1980s.As for the second question,there are mainly five Korean versions of Rickshaw Boy,which include Kim Ha-joong's version,Choi Young-Ae and Young-oak Kim's version,Kim Sung-tae's version,Yoo Sung-joon's version and Shin Kyu-ho and Yoo So-young's version.Due to different original versions that they have chosen,there also exist some distinctions among their translations.Compared with other three,Kim Ha-joong's and Kim Sung-tae's versions have not assured the integrity of its original contents.Because of different experiences and preferences of translators,both of their translations represent deviations to some extent,either on translation methods or translation qualities.Choi Young-Ae and Young-oak Kim's versions,however,are the most valuable ones among all of these five,no matter from the perspectives of content integrity or from the translations' high qualities;in Yoo Sung-joon's version,errors and omissions appears frequently;Sim Kyu-ho and Yoo So-young have added many Korean common expression to their translation,leading to a succinct and relaxed language style which are more acceptable to Korean readers,but at the same time also causing the loss of language characteristics and cultural phenomenon in original content.At last,considering the general reception towards Rickshaw Boy,Korean scholars have affirmed its literary values,either in cultural narrative,or in language arts and even the ideology of humanity.Not only focusing on Rickshaw Boy itself,they also compare it with other Korean authors' literary works,and through these comparisons they build a bridge between these two countries' literature and culture.Besides,Korean readers hold two kinds of "expectation horizon"—one is literary expectation and the other is life expectation.With these two impulsions,they begin the communication with protagonists beyond time and space limit.In conclusion,Lao She's full-length novel Rickshaw Boy and its translated version in Korean have promoted the literal and cultural exchange between China and South Korea.Besides,from the translation and diffusion of Lao She's works,we can pry into the venation of Chinese modern literature's diffusion and reception in South Korea.It is based on this consensus that the study on the translation of Lao She's works has its irreplaceable values.
