The present thesis takes Andrew Sean Greer's The Story of a Marriage(Chapter 1)for a case study to explore how to reproduce the linguistic style of the original in light of dynamic imitationBeing consistent with Andrew Sean Greer's linguistic style,The Story of a Marriage is bewitching due to its nuanced description, crafted sentences and abundant rhetorical devices. For the author of the present thesis, the biggest challenge in translating the novel lies in the reproduction of Andrew Sean Greer's distinct linguistic style.Synthesizing SL-oriented representation and TL-oriented representation, dynamic imitation is a more flexible and feasible approach in the reproduction of the linguistic style of the original. The present thesis discusses the reproduction of the linguistic style of The Story of a Marriage at lexical, syntactic and rhetorical levels in light of dynamic imitation. When the diction and sentence structures are significant to the original work,I adopt SL-oriented representation. When the readability of the translation is inferior if SL-oriented representation is applied,TL-oriented representation is adopted. On the whole,I adopt dynamic imitation in translating the excerpts of the novel to make the readers of the translation have similar responses with the readers of the original.Dynamic imitation is based on dynamic equivalence which means to pursue the functional equivalence between target language and source language. In order to achieve that equivalence, the translator should adopt flexible translation strategies to reproduce the linguistic style of the original. The case study result shows that dynamic imitation offers a relatively powerful approach in translating the linguistic style of literary works.
