The Study Of Adverb System In Baoshan Bamboo Slips Of Chu State Tomb

The bamboo slips discovered in the tomb of the Chu State in Baoshan constituted an important part of the unearthed documents of the 20 th century.In terms of contents,they included three major types: judicial documents,divination,and Qiance(a list of items for funeral rites).Because of the numerous historical facts and information they revealed,the bamboo slips had captured significant attention in the academic circles.Baoshan bamboo slips were rich in words and abundant in quantity.Research on them mainly focused on ancient folk culture of the Chu State,especially the divination and funeral culture,while only a few studies put emphasis on the lexicon appearing in the bamboo slips.In fact,lexical study was a major focus of linguistic research,and the study of function words had a long history.Research into the function words in the bamboo slips will contribute to the understanding of people's language expression and life style in the Warring States Period.Based on the book Baoshan Bamboo Slips published by the Cultural Relics Press in 1991,this thesis chose the adverbs appearing in Baoshan bamboo slips as the research subject and discussed the use of adverbs with the assistance of relevant historical data and results from other linguistic studies,aiming at providing research foundation and references for studies on bamboo and silk manuscripts and those on classical Chinese grammar.This thesis was divided into three parts.The first chapter,the general introduction,presented the research subject and background,the literature review and research methodology,and the definition and classification of adverbs in three separate sections,offering a detailed review of lexical studies in the relevant academic field.The second chapter was the main body of the research,where different categories of adverbs including time adverbs,degree adverbs,negative adverbs,modal adverbs and scope adverbs were presented and discussed according to the classification criteria.With the proof of historical literature and materials,this chapter sorted the adverbs in the Baoshan bamboo slips and analyzed their use in the specific context.The third chapter was the conclusion part,presenting main points and a summary of the foregoing discussion.
