This is a project report on the Chinese translation of Of Woman Born:Motherhood as Experience and Institution written by Adrienne Rich,a famous contemporary American female writer.The content of this translation includes the whole first chapter "Anger and Tenderness" and a part of the fifth chapter "the Domestication of Motherhood".According to her own feminist ideas,Adrienne Rich used an ordinary and trivial narrating way to share some unique feminist experience in her work.Moreover,in combination with her personal experience and marriage life,Rich showed her sympathy and reflected on women's common living condition restricted by traditional marriage.In recent years,women's social status has been developing gradually with the rise of feminism.By contrast,the domestic research on Rich's feminism is still at the exploratory stage.As such,this project provides further research,relevant references and subsequent translation on Rich's works for domestic researchers and scholars as well as for Chinese feminist struggles.The translator chooses the Functionalist Skopos theory as the guiding theory of this translation practice.Combining "purpose principle,coherence principle and fidelity principles",the author analyses the translation of some proper nouns,culture loaded words,abstract nouns,and words in double quotes.In accordance with the Chinese expression habits,the translator chooses amplification and conversion strategies to deal with the difficult sentences in the original text.Translation practice is the process of finding and solving problems.Thus,the translator has accumulated a lot of experience by analyzing and solving some difficulties and translating problems.Besides,the translator gains much enlightenment in English-Chinese translation as well.For example,before translating,the translator should make adequate preparations,including the author's life,her main thoughts and writing style and so on.In the course of translation,the translator should fully convey the culture of the target and original language by using some appropriate translation strategies and techniques in order to reproduce the original meaning and style.After the job of translation,the translator needs to read the whole text again before reviewing and proofreading the translation so as to secure the high-quality translation.
