Genre painting constitutes a significant theme in traditional painting and plays a crucial role in the development of painting in China,among which genre paintings in Song Dynasty rank first.In Nansong Dynasty,genre paintings sprang up to satisfy peoples' aesthetic needs materially and spiritually,adapting to the increasing expansion of the social strata with the rapid economic development.Genre paintings reached the peak in Nansong Dynasty,during which the themes were explored and the mundane life of common people as well as sufferings of people in the bottom strata was displayed.As products under the specific historical circumstance,paintings during this period were full of characteristics of the times and epitomized the social and cultural life then,which was significant from the perspective of Social History.The creation of genre painting was unprecedentedly prosperous,giving vivid and unsophisticated pictures of the social life at that time through its unique perspective in the depiction of ways of the world of different social classes during that period.The paper mainly studied Street Vendors collected in the Palace Museum.The painting was observed within the era it was created to unearth the contribution of genre paintings in Nansong Dynasty to Chinese traditional art history.This paper combined Philology and Iconology,uncovering the mundane life in Nansong Dynasty revolving around vendors' images and goods they sold in the painting.The paper consisted of four parts.The briefly introduced the research goal,research significance,research progress and research methodology.The first chapter described the general information of genre painting and the era it survived,which provided the background information of Li Song,an experienced painter,and his painting style.The second chapter mainly aimed at the painting itself.The goods depicted in the painting were delicate and vivid.Customs,mundane life and the economic background at that time were analyzed through characters and props depicted in the painting.With regard to expression techniques employed in the painting,three aspects were explored:composition,ink and lines,modemism.Finally,the influence of Li Song' Street Vendors on later painting was discussed.
