The continuous rise of the overall strength of China has led to worldwide enthusiasm of Chinese study,and the American AP Chinese Project has emerged from this wave.In recent years,the research on the AP Chinese Project has attracted the attention of scholars both at home and abroad,but they mostly focus on the teaching mode and test of AP Chinese Courses.There is not much research on textbooks,and most of the research are just the theoretical discussion and empirical description,ignoring the subjective initiative of teachers and students,and lack empirical research.In addition,language and culture are closely related,to understand and master another language,we must understand the culture to which the language belongs.It is also true of AP Chinese teaching,the textbooks also put forward higher requirements for the selection and arrangement of Chinese cultural elements.Therefore,this thesis is based on the cultural syllabus of the AP Courses promulgated by the American College Board,combined with the cultural requirements mentioned in AP Chinese Language and Culture Course Description and the cultural classification of domestic authoritative scholars.Then the cultural classification standard of this thesis is determined.Basically,the thesis studies two representative AP Chinese textbooks Chinese for the Global Community and Advancing in Chinese,making a statistical analysis of the Chinese cultural elements involved in the textbooks.The study finds that the two sets of textbooks have a reasonable side in the selection and arrangement of Chinese cultural elements,mainly reflected in the representation of cultural elements selection and the diversity of arrangement.However,there are also deficiencies,such as:unbalanced selection of cultural elements,unbalanced regional culture and so on.Based on the analysis of textbooks,this thesis conducted an empirical investigation of 100 American high school students and 10 AP Chinese teachers.The questionnaire shows that high school students in the United States are generally familiar with China's national condition and contemporary life,but have little knowledge of cultural traditions,science and technology,etc.The interview shows that the AP Chinese teachers are basically satisfied with the selection and arrangement of cultural elements in the existing AP Chinese textbooks,but they also raise issues such as the textbooks are lack of electronic resources and lack of hierarchical level of cultural content.Finally,based on the analysis of textbooks and empirical investigations,this thesis proposes some feasible suggestions for the preparation of AP Chinese textbooks.In conclusion,this thesis makes a preliminary attempt to classify,analyse and investigate cultural elements in the field of AP Chinese,discussing the rationality of the selection and arrangement of Chinese cultural elements in the two sets of AP Chinese textbooks.The role of the two main groups of teachers and students has been defined through empirical research.On one hand,it can enrich the research results of the American AP Chinese Project.On the other hand,it can also provide a reference for the preparation,use and research of AP Chinese textbooks.
