The study on The Romance of the Three Kingdoms in North America didn't really start until the 1970 s.Although the study started a bit late,it has generated many important research results.C.T.Hsia and Andrew H.Plaks put forward new viewpoints on the literature style,narrative structure,antithetical parallelism aesthetics,rhetorical devices,overlapping of characters and ways of theme expression.The study not only promoted the spread of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms in North America,but also provided new research angles and perspectives for domestic scholars,which was of great significance to expand the research space and to renovate research pattern of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.The paper systematically combs the communication process and research results on The Romance of the Three Kingdoms in North America,and summaries research approaches of North American scholars,in order to provide some reference to domestic scholars who work on The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.The paper is divided into three chapters.The first chapter mainly combs the communication of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms in North America.In the 1830 s,American missionaries came to China,in the process of cultural communication between China and America,The Romance of the Three Kingdoms began to spread widely in North America through translation passages,translations,English journals and sinology studies.Due to the differences of cultural traditions,at the beginning,The Romance of the Three Kingdoms in North America didn't spread as much as other Asian countries,but in the past few decades,American sinologist's research on The Romance of the Three Kingdoms has caught up,and the research results have got high theoretical depth and reference value.The second chapter is based on the related works of North American scholars' study on The Romance of the Three Kingdoms,analyzing the contents and perspectives of the study of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.North American scholars attach importance to the interpretation of the text,on the basis of which they extract the overall layout of the “Ten Times " structure,the “Three and Four times" sub-structure and the seasonal framework of the temporal structure;deal with the detailed structure by means of image overlapping and " foreshadowing".Andrew H.Plaks first put forward the concepts of “literati novel ",and set off the characters and plots with the narrative principle of “irony".Three Kingdoms and Chinese Culture represents the latest research results by North American scholars,which interprets The Romance of the Three Kingdoms from the culture perspective,and also put forward some new ideas.From comparison prospective,the third chapter analyzes the basic research methods and inspiration of North American scholars' study on The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.One of the most important characteristics of the study is to put the novel under the background of world literature,to study it with the text as the center,and to interpret it with the methods of comparison and culturology,which has brought some enlightenment to domestic scholars.In order to make new breakthrough in the study of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms,we must strengthen cross-cultural research,pay equal attention to theories and methods,and increase the study of the text itself.
