The development of humanities and social sciences has led to an increase of high-level research findings from Chinese scholars. As a result, there is an ever-growing demand for translating these findings to other languages. The translation of research works will not only help spread academic achievements, but also promote cultural exchange. However, only a limited number of translators have devoted themselves in this field up to now.The translator chose an academic paper in the field of educational sociology for translation research.Rural Students in China's Elite Universities: Social Mobility and Habitus Transformation was published in 2016 on CSSCI journal Educational Research. It is an influential academic paper in this research area, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. Therefore, translating this paper is of practical significance, because it can help researchers in other countries understand the current research situation of Chinese scholars in this area. This Chinese to English translation report demonstrates the whole translation process, providing other translators who are interested in this type of texts with reference of translation procedures. This report analyzes this translation project systematically from the aspects of preparation before translation, translation theory and strategy and case study.Examples are used in this report to show preparation before translation: how to improve accuracy of term translation and ensure the uniformity of language style by selecting and utilizing parallel texts;CAT's role in improving translation efficiency and guaranteeing consistency of translation.Meanwhile, the importance and potential of CAT are pointed out. Some terms and sentences in both Chinese and English versions of Rural Students in China's Elite Universities: Social Mobility and Habitus Transformation are selected in this report for case study.Newmark's translation theory and strategy concerning functions of language, text types, semantic translation and communicative translation are mainly used for reference and applied throughout the translation. On the basis of his theory, this report also elaborates theories of other Chinese and foreign scholars and builds up a flexible analytic framework which is suitable for this translation project. The analysis is carried out from the angle of translation of jargons,culture-loaded words, long and complex sentences and direct quotations. This report also summarizes the problems and challenges in the process of translation and puts forward corresponding solutions and measures in detail.Hopefully,it will offer some reference to other translators.
