A Report On The E-C Translation Of Chapter 1 Of Translation, Linguistics, Culture: A French-English Handbook

Translation,as a discipline,has attracted increasing attention in China.Translation,Linguistics,Culture: A French English Handbook is a work about translation issues between English and French from the view of linguistics and culture,which can bring new perspectives of looking into translation for Chinese scholars who are interested in translation.The translator chooses the first chapter of the book as the source text and tries to conclude his translation task in a systematized way.The translation practice was guided by Peter Newmark's theory of texttypes,whereby the method of semantic translation is adopted for the handling of expressive texts,because it helps to achieve the expressiveness of the author's thoughts,and the method of communicative translation is applied to approaching informative and vocative texts for it seeks to realize the acceptability of the target text by readers.Through the practice,the translator finds that there are a lot of special terms in the field of linguistics and translation,long and complicated sentences and passages.In order to solve these problems,under the theory of text-types,the translator first sorted out the text-types of the source language and then resorted to different methods to the translation practice.In order to meet the requirements of each translation method,the translator adopted different operations,namely,exact rendering of terms to achieve expressiveness,and structural adjustment,splitting and addition to long and complicated sentences in order to make the target text coherent,readable and acceptable.Finally,professionalism in translation is achieved through the mastering of languages of interest,relevant knowledge in the field of translation,CAT tools and translation ethics.
