Leo?Janá?ek?1854—1928?,a remarkable representative for the Czech national school in the 20th century.He inherited the musical tradition of the Czech national school in the 19th century,which was represented by Bedrich Smetana and Antonín Dvo?ák,widen the national consciousness and the creating method.Leo?Janá?ek devoted himself into the work in gathering and analyzing the Czech folk songs and formed a deep recognition to the folk song and the living condition of the ordinary people.He focused on the innovation based on the traditional musical composing system.He took the elements from Czech folk ballad as references.Such as main theme materials,type of the rhythm and harmony.Also,he combined his creation with the method of European tradition and early modern time.All these efforts made his works become the precious artistic treasures,and made huge contribution to the development of the Czech national music in the 20thh century.The thesis will start with the introduction of Leo?Janá?ek's lifetime and the historical background of his creation.His master piece On An Overgrown Path Book I will be analyzed in detail from its mode and nature,the structure of the music form,the image of the title and the national character.All these study will help to discover the artistic feature of this work.Also,the relationship between the work itself with its pianistic performance and musical expression will be discussed.This will be helpful when investigating how to express its artistic character during performing and teaching.Nevertheless,it will provide some guidance on a better way to perform and study this work.
