| Zuo Lin is one of the most famous film and theatre directors in China.He has started his career since the early 40’s,he has been actively involved in the stage and film industry until the end of 80’s.Zuo Lin and Jiao Juyin are the most distinguished masters in Chinese drama history and they were called “North Jiao and South Huang”by the scholar.Zuo Lin is accomplished in stage practice especially in putting forward the critical theatrical theory “Freehand Drama views” in the early 60 s.By far many scholar have focused on Zuo Lin’s drama creation as well as his theories,however,his film works and aesthetic style are not systematically studied.Historical research will be adopted as the basic method in this paper,the author will analyze Zuo Lin and his film works through film newspapers,magazines,archives and films,the author will also describe the film creation experiences of Zuo Lin from 1947 to 1981,analyzing the historical development clues of his film creation and discussing the specific living condition of intellectuals like Zuo Lin in that era.The paper is structured in three chapters.The first and second chapter will summarize the history of Zuo Lin’s film creation.The first chapter include Zuo Lin’s early life experiences,drama practice during the war time and his film creation in Wen Hua film company from 1945 to 1952.The second chapter will focus on his film creation in state-owned film company since the era of public-private partnership to the middle of the “Seventeen Years”(1952-1956)and to the new era(1977-1981).The third chapter will analyze Zuo Lin’s creation phenomenon by connecting to the“intellectual topic”.The goal of the third chapter is to explain the development of Zuo Lin’s previous historical experiences.As an artist and an intellectual,Zuo Lin’s creation process can be divided into four periods.The author will also give his thought about the spiritual world of the intellectuals in this chapter. |
