A Report On The Translation Of Handbook Of Pollution Prevention And Cleaner Production-best Practices In The Petroleum Industry(Excerpts)

This is a report on the English-Chinese translation of the last chapter from the book Handbook of Pollution Prevention and Cleaner Production-Best Practices in the Petroleum Industry,which provides some best practices in and guidance on pollution prevention and cleaner production technologies and falls into the category of petroleum English.As a branch of EST,petroleum English enjoys its own characteristics,such as application of abstract nouns and terminology,employment of long and complex sentences as well as passive sentences.And the report introduces P.Newmark's communicative translation theory as a theoretical guidance for petroleum English translation.According to the content and type of text,Newmark classified texts into three types: expressive function text,informative function text and vocative function text.And petroleum English belongs to informative-function text.Therefore,the translator should not only convey the meaning of the original but also attempt to produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the original.On the basis of numerous case analyses,the translator concentrates on translation strategies from lexical level,syntactic level and textual level,aiming to strengthen the understanding of petroleum English and command its translation methods.Hopefully this report can serve as reference for those who are committed to petroleum English translation.
